On this day in military history....in 1777. The British forces under General John Burgoyne surrendered to the Continental Army of General Horatio Gates at the Battle of Saratoga, north of Albany, New York. After having learned of the victory, the French decided to help the Americans with their revolution against the British and insure that at Yorktown, four years later, the British would be defeated and forced to leave the United States.
